We started 2 years ago with a plan. That flew out the window in about 2 weeks. Just taking it one day at a time now. When we tell someone that we will be along on a certain date it normally comes out as "sometime between Sunday and Saturday. We'll call when we get close or narrow it down to a day."
When you don't know exactly what's around the next corner it becomes hard to plan. Pleasant surprises are the best.
