What did you forget in your budget planning?

We are going FT next spring and, being the overplanner that I am, I have about a dozen different budgets. I'm curious about other peoples' experience with budgeting, specifically what budget line items did you miss when planning?

  • My budget my whole life............working and retirement has been the same

Don't spend more then you bring home and pay yourself each payday as a reoccurring bill.
  • I now plan a bigger maintenance contingency fund than when we started. We wound up replacing tires on the truck, rig and motorcycle all in the same year. We've also spent more on sight seeing than we planned, but we are constantly touring and finding things to go see and do. We've adjusted for both going forward.
  • Like anything else stay within your means (income). Track 1st years expenses then try to improve on it for inflation.
  • You cannot judge your expenses by what anyone else says. There are budgets from $15k a year, to $150k a year.

Our first year out we had a $10k oh **** category.

Only way to truly know is by doing it.

Have a blast. Every day is a new adventure and learning experience.
  • So far I think we planned pretty good, but I can see our vehicle replacement amount was way off.
