Don't leave the black valve open, you may be creating your own issues. make sure black tank is as full as you can before flushing like the others said. As far as the Grey tank, be careful about letting it stay open to long without at least running a bit of water and exercise the knife valve so you don't get stuff stuck in the groove, this may cause soap scum, food particles etc. to build up in that area and then you can't close valve, or it may not seal. Water, try to flush black tank wit an extra swoosh of water, maybe a five gallon bucket dumped in the toilet with the knife valve open. Oh and why are you dumping in the desert?
