Wisconsin Domicle

Does anyone out there use Wisconsin as domicle? We are currently residents and thinking of keeping for a year or two until we figuire out what state we what. Looking to use Good Sam mail service, but that won't give us a physical address for dirvers licensing, etc. Looks like DMV doesn't accept po box for legal address. Any help would be helpful
  • Do you have family with a physical address? If you're thinking short term, that might be easiest. WI likes to tax pensions an SS so I wouldn't make a choice when time comes to hit the road.
  • Pensions and SS are income. Wisconsin has a state income tax. We kept Wisconsin as our domicile while full time RVing. Health care (South Dakota just didn't work for us for health insurance) and RV/auto insurance is cheaper in Wisconsin than Florida, Texas and South Dakota, as is vehicle registration. The overall cost differences were not that great to justify switching for us.

Good point. That is what I was saying, you have to consider everything when starting to full time. For us it was an easy decision to keep our address in Illinois.

Illinois also has a state income tax, but pensions and SS are not taxed. Of course since Illinois is the most broke state of any, that could change someday. Also, I am not sure if your pensions are originating from a company that is in Wisconsin, and you end up being an Illinois resident, if you would still get dinged for Wisconsin income tax, but I wouldn't think so.

Don't know what Wisconsin truck and RV registrations fees are, but Illinois is $105 per year the the 1-ton TV and $50 for the fiver. Progressive has our full timers insurance plus our full coverage on three vehicles. They know we could have any or all of our vehicles an any of the 50 states during the year. My vehicle insurance went down about 30% when I went full time and switched to Progressive.

I'm not saying every full timer should start using mail services in Illinois and get an address there. However, from what information has been posted under this topic by others it could be a possibility for Wisconsin full timers (you could still be a Packer's fan).
