10 percent cancellation fee!!!!

Cancellation fees vary from company to company- and even from State to State within the same company, as is evidently the case in your situation. A percentage charge isn't unusual. Easy to find out about in the shopping phase. Here's a link to a general list that's been around for several years- good starting point. (List predates GMAC's name change to National General, but does indicate that cancellation fees vary from state to state. Good thing to look into before buying in a particular State!)


Also, in my case at least cancellation charge policies are clearly stated on the policy itself. (I'm with Safeco)
