50% Off Deal - Legit?

Answered in replies 1 and 2. Thanks!

Was considering roadside assistance again. Was with coach-net for several years, but after seeing today's pricing, I thought to look elsewhere. Once on the GS site, I saw they are having a big promotion; 50% off for new members.

Now is that a legitimate promo? Or are these prices standard for new or returning members?

    ???

    You were kidding, right?

My thread here is IN that forum. I had found it during my research phase. And had come across several posts of yours touting coach-net over Good Sam. And I HAVE taken your opinions into account. Had I not found negative reports about coach-net too, this would probably be easier.

Seems like both can be hit or miss, depending upon who answers the phone. It's probably hard to find good people nowadays because they can make more on unemployment. Too bad.

    I sincerely appreciate the help!

I have had both services. I received Coach-Net when I bought my trailer as a bonus from the manufacturer. I have had GS for many years. I have not had any complaint on how GS has handled my needs over those years. Coach-Net did fine as well. A friend of mine runs a roadside service/towing and told me that all of the services use the same providers but may pay them differently.(i.e. discounts, payment timeliness, and give-backs)He also said that bad outcomes are not always the fault of the service, some customers can expect something that is not part of the service and then complain they were treated badly( Imagine that:S )

Pricing for discounts and “teaser” rates for new customers are two very common. Marketing strategies. There is a large percentage of consumers who react positively to sales and discounts, irrespective of net price. They will choose the item listed at $50 with a 50% discount over the exact same item at $23 in another store.
Similarly, customers have been shown to have a reluctance to price shopping and changing providers on recurring purchases. Once the customer is secured by that teaser rate, they often become customers for life who are very price insensitive. Good Sam is an avid user of both of those strategies.

I fell off the turnip truck at least 2 weeks ago. I was just curious if this "big discount" was something they actually offer 365 days a year. Or if it was really the standard rate for renewing members, as well. Or if it really is a discount that will end in a few days like they say it will.

    But thanks.
Your replies to me and others sure seem to show you have all the answers, so why did you waste everyone's time asking the questions? Maybe common courtesy is something they teach week three on the Turnip truck.

    Ha!

Yeah. I've seen several reports where someone had GS and CN and nether were able to find a tow truck. From what I've ready, it could have been the dispatcher. Or it could have been the payment offer, and subsequent pot sweeteners, were not agreeable to the locals. Or it could have just been no one felt like getting out of bed to help that day.

You're right. I can see I should have used a smiley for this one. Apologies if I came off rude. That was not my intention. My opening sentence sounded a lot funnier in my head than it probably looked in print.

    :)

However, I did not know the answers to my 2 questions. Replies 1 and 2 answered them.

"Now is that a legitimate promo? Or are these prices standard for new or returning members?"

I understand teaser rates. But heck... if one company is offering a teaser rate and the other one isn't...

And if research indicates that... over the years... the two have become more and more comparable...

  • To those who compare GS and Coachnet road service, please point me to the forum, sponsored by Coachnet, where members can complain about the times they have had a problem with the service. At lease GS gives members a voice to management to voice some concerns. Don't see that with the other services.

My personal experience with GS road service was 100% positive. Here is what I posted several years ago about my one need for roadside service in over 30 years of trailering.
    Barney

Thought you might be interested in one of our "adventures" during our trip back home to Michigan from Florida this week. We left Tampa on Tuesday morning. All went well until I made a great BIG expensive blunder. Stopped at Flying J to fill up about 1/2 way through our day on Friday (Franklin, KY). There were three pumps at the RV island. Stupid me mistakenly thought all three were diesel pumps. Don't know why because I have stopped at Flying J RV island many times. Anyway, the ONE diesel pump had a broken hose on my side, so instead of picking up the GREEN hose on the other side of the island, I picked up the BLACK hose at the next pump. Filled up my tank (was about 2/3 empty) and went inside to get my receipt. On the way out, I looked at it and it said 26 gallons of REGULAR!!!!. I went and looked at the pump and, sure enough, I had filled up with gasoline instead of diesel!

I called Good Sam and about 1/2 hour later a tow truck came and towed me 20 miles to Bowling Green, Kentucky to a place that pumped out my tank, changed filters and blew out all my lines. Flying J said I could drop the trailer in the parking lot so they only had to tow my truck. They put me on a large flat bed wrecker. They were going to send two wreckers to tow both truck and trailer but I preferred them not to since I have the Hensley. $400 and 4 hours later we were on our way again. Got to our campground that night a bit late and a lot poorer! What a bonehead move! Learned a good lesson though. Always take a look at the pump two times before you pump that stuff! Thank goodness we are members of Good Sam Emergency Road Service. They really came through for us. One phone call and they arranged the tow and the repair facility. I didn't even have to sign anything for the towing job.

Thought you might enjoy hearing about my stupid mistake. Sure hope it is the last one like that that I make! It could have been worse though. If I had taken off down the road, I could have destroyed my engine and been stuck for a while beside the road.
I think Marlene is going to rib me for a while about this one!

Yeah, but you just may have set a new land speed, diesel RV record!

Thanks for the candid share, Barney. So glad you caught that in time!

Since I've never made a single mistake in my life, I hereby judge you harshly and cast the first stone.

And yeah... I imagine I'm just missing it somehow, but Coach-net also sure doesn't make it easy to find a full, detailed coverage brochure.

I had no problem finding one on Good Sam.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
  • OK, admittedly, midnightsadie's post struck a chord.

In my time with them, I had nothing but good service from Coach-Net.

So I continued my exhaustive research... in the name of science! My time is worth much more than if I had just signed up for both, but I have this need to make informed decisions. Measure twice, cut once... and so forth.

Though there were certainly some, overall the negative postings about Coach-Net were relatively few.

I was able to find a sample, "Premier Coach Membership Guide" by adding "pdf" to the google search. I think they should make that easy to find, so one knows what he's getting before cutting the check. I wasn't in love with the wording of "...nearest qualified repair facility as determined by us." What if they're qualified, but don't want to do the job? Good Sam's membership guide seems to be more clear about this.

In the end I went ahead and signed back up for Coach-Net. It has been 2 years since my last membership expired, so I didn't get the $169 renew rate. BUT... since the MH is a Winnebago, the nice young lady signed me up for the Winnebago Premier Plan, which is the same as the non-branded premier MH plan, only its 179 bucks instead of $249. She said renewal rates are also $179, so if true, I guess they'll make that back up in 7 years if I'm still driving the Winnebago.

There was one website I searched through that sealed the deal for me. Not sure how I feel about posting it here, but let's just say... it's kind of an obvious place anyone should look to for information, complaints and reviews on just about any business.

Good Sam had plenty of reviews.

Coach-Net had virtually none. So either Good Sam is just IMMENSELY more popular. Or Coach-Net is benefiting from the old adage, "If a customer has a good experience, they'll tell 1 person. If they have a bad one, they'll tell 10."

Hopefully I'll never have to call them for more than technical assistance or other minor services to see if they're "as good as they once was." But if I do, then I guess I'll find out.

    Thanks for all the help!
