Allow me to vent

I've had decent success with Good Sam up until today. I've had to use them 3 times over 11 years until today. My luck has run out with the 4th call it seems.

Wife drove home from work on a flat tire. Tire is shot and won't hold air now, split in sidewall. I call Good Sam at 7 am this morning hoping for a shorter queue. It's now almost noon and still no tow truck.

It's -7 outside right now or I would jack the van up and take the tire to a tire store myself. Good Sam says higher than normal call volume because of the weather. I get that. But you would think they could get a tow truck out in less than 5 hours! Jeez!

Thanks for listening, I'll go back to stewing in silence.

He pays Good Sam, Good Sam is where the buck stops....
  • Back in the day I worked for a towing company that also did work for AAA . . We were told (by AAA) that ANY calls for people at home got put on the end of the list,, we needed to get the stranded people taken care of first.. Not sure of what their policies are now but have to agree , people on the road are far more important...I am Glad your wife got home safe at the expense of a tire!

Ah, my friend, that's the problem: if you call during the Big Rush, there will be waits. My guess is that between the folks like you who would normally do it themselves, but won't this time because it is too cold and the folks whose vehicles started fine yesterday when it was warm, that the guys who do the work are busier than the mythical one-arm paper hanger.

And I'm gonna guess too that they are dealing with the folks stranded in the middle of nowhere before they deal with those who merely drove home on it and are in no danger of freezing to death.

Since your bride made it home safe and sound, albeit with a ruined tire, better that they do rescue others first. They will get there in due course, I'm sure. Relax and be sure to offer them a hot cocoa when they do arrive. I'm sure they will be grateful.

  • Think you've got a problem, call for a furnace repair. I've been waiting for two months for my yearly, before-winter, furnace checkup. The weather hasn't cooperated with my need for routine visits. The real need is for those stranded on the road.
  • Waited for 12 Hrs near Toledo for AAA. TV disabled Thursday at home so no big problem. The towing company was having problems with equipment problems. Cold does nasty things to metal.
I was not an emergency there were many that were!
  • Maybe the tow companies are busier getting folks off streets and highways, and vans sitting in driveways get a much lower priority.

I haven't read my policy recently but I always considered it to be used for roadside emergencies.
