Social media in and of itself has very little sway on a company. It only comes into play when normal media gets it and runs. If Uniteds trouble had only been on twitter or Facebook they would have let it die off. When the major media outlets got wind of it and made it news they had to act.
Social media may have the fuel but unless a major news outlet ignites it; it will never go anywhere.
