Social media in and of itself has very little sway on a company. It only comes into play when normal media gets it and runs. If Uniteds trouble had only been on twitter or Facebook they would have let it die off. When the major media outlets got wind of it and made it news they had to act.
Social media may have the fuel but unless a major news outlet ignites it; it will never go anywhere.
Time for some fact-checking here:
The first day that this scandal went viral, United's valuation sunk by 780 million dollars.
As a United CEO would have it, he went on to attempt damage control and said: "we're sorry to re-accommodate the passenger" instead of apologizing to Dr. Dao.
That made things worse and United's stock went even more heading to the gutter.
And then you say that social media has very little sway. The person who took the video showing Dr Dao being dragged like a sack of potatoes went on the web instantly. Major news outlets only picked it up after it had been posted by the person who owns the video.
Sounds like a case of: what came first the chicken or the egg?
Each of these major news outlets were lining up to use the video on their news coverage.
I bet you every time you see the clip on TV the video owner gets his royalty, he won't even know who to start with. . .while tagging along a sack of moola on his way to the bank.
The CEO's ignominious act turned out to be very costly and that's another fact.
If the major news companies had not picked it up, it would not have had that impact. As I said social media was the fuel but without the ignition and wide spread reach of major media it would not go as far.
The Facebook post becomes the property of Facebook(per their terms of use); the poster gets nothing but an acknowledgement. That same terms of use applies to everything posted on this forum.
