Although the fine details of this story don't line up exactly as I would expect, I stand corrected knowing this lady is 70 years old. My mother is 90 and for the last 30 years her stories seem to get more and more scrambled and make less and less sense. In her mind she has all the facts. But she fails to communicate key pieces of information that leaves the story line like a dangling participle. My mother also has a way of emphasizing the story line where it impacts her the most, many times omitting details that led up to that end.
So for our original poster, being 70 years old, perhaps she's just not a good story teller. Or in her frustration did not convey the events or series of events in a good manner that I can wrap my head around. This doesn't mean the events did not happen. Why this couple were in this position in the first place is beyond me. But hey!!!! Any one of us can take off on vacation and have a heart-attack or a stroke, or break a neck, or get into an auto accident! Does that always make sense? No. I'm sure when this couple hit the road, this type of thing was not in their plans. And sometimes, it's just important to vent our frustrations.
So, I am reminded that my cynical dis-belief in this story was a bit unfounded and I apologize for that.
