Do I call the repair service or tow service first?

My Jeep Wrangler is stuck in Neutral and won't go into gear. I pushed it into a church parking lot and now I'm not sure what to do, I've never done this before. I have the numbers of both the repair shop and the towing service. Which do I call first? Would it be smart to have them tow it straight to the repair shop?

  • I call a shop first to make sure the repair can be made properly in reasonable time. They may even have an affiliated tow company. I don't subscribe to any tow service. Get what I need when I need it. If I had a big rig I might consider it.
  • dwalker4 p.s don,t you read the horror stories on here about GS?? theres other companies.
  • I am considering purchasing the Good Sams Platinum Complete coverage I have a 35 '- Georgie Boy Cruise Master would it be wise for me to get the Platinum Complete coverage or is there one you guys suggest?
  • Find the repair shop first. Then call for a tow. If they won't tow it to the shop for say distance then pay the difference to the tow company. Don't accept them towing it to their choice.

If they don't tow it to the repair shop then it's your problem as they won't tow it a second time.
  • Shaun,

Are you sure it's the transmission and not the transfer case? If it's the transfer case there is a small plastic clip that holds the cable to the case and they are known to break easily if forced. Not expensive to fix, but not easy to access either, especially when on the road. Any Jeep dealership should be able to repair this quickly for you. Hope this helps.

  • Call the repair shop first telling them what the problem is and be sure they will accept the Jeep. Then find a place where you can be comfortable for several hours. Then call Good Sam roadside assistance and be prepared to be hung up on at least once, argue that your roadside assistance does cover towing the Jeep, being put on hold for at least 45 minutes, talking to an off-shore call center where the agent barely speaks English, being told that there is no towing service available, being told they will only tow it to Bubba's Shade Tree Garage, and ulitmately finding your on tow service. Then come back here and complain about the poor service so Ella can ask for your contact information to never be heard from again.
  • X2 that is great advice . you could google your problem might fix it right there in the church lot .
  • Call road service; they will contact the appropriate towing company and have
the vehicle towed to the repair shop.

It's up to you but the last 2 times I had my vehicle towed to my home where
I took care of the problem.

It could be a simple problem as the neutral safety switch which is stopping
the lever moving out of neutral
