Bob,
That's one view but I don't understand your cost scenarios because there are almost no truck stops or Pilot/FJ for the Alaskan trip.
In 2013 we saved about $300 on our 9,600 mile Alaskan trip at 8 MPG. Virtually all of that was due to the 5% Penfed Cash Rewards CC card. So why didn't we use truck stops and Pilot? I already covered that.
Is a $300 savings a big deal? Certainly not considering what we spent on that trip but then I'll take a "free" $300 any day.
But what's not to like about our 5% Penfed Cash Recards card with no Canadian transaction fees unlike Amex?
Our story even if off topic: After years of indecision we decided to make the Alaskan trip so that we could complete or "Once in a lifetime trip and cross it off our bucket list." I cannot begin to describe this trip to you here but after arriving in Alaska we looked at each other and said "This is an adventure and we're coming back." We were unable to make it in 2015 and our sights are now set on 2016.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
