Good Sam - Woodall's CG Directory

Good Sam took over Woodall's campground directory and changed the format. Can't view campground by location and map. Little information on non-Good Sam campgrounds. It's a pain to use.

A bulletin said the format and features of Woodall's would be added to the Good Sam online directory. Then nothing happened. What is the status?

Is there any hope of a better directory?

  • When you go to select the state to view, their is a little box below that says "Good Sam Parks". It is automatically selected. Deselect it and all the parks will show up. You will have to zoom in more on areas to see more selections show up. But that is the nature of the beast with the online mapping. You can't show an entire state on one screen and have every campground/rv park show up as an icon. First of all, they would be covering each other up. Then you would need to zoom in anyway to be able to select one. I find it pretty simple to use.
  • Hi zekegb - I'm glad you tried the map search again and I hear your thoughts on the public campgrounds being hard to find. Users do need to zoom in to an area to see the public parks locations represented by the logo - a green fir tree in a circle. Good Sam Parks appear by default and other private parks appear when All Camping is checked under Refine Search.

Although we highlight Good Sam Parks in our search results initially, with the Map Search you can still see how far a park is from a chosen location, and in the Campground Search tool you can limit by a specific a mile range from a city or zip code and results in order of Good Sam Parks by distance and then other parks by distance.

We will be revisiting at the search results order for 2014.

    Thanks,

  • Ellen,
    OK, I tried again.

Went to Good Sam directory. Used the map search feature. Selected Oregon, since I am very familiar with campgrounds in the sate.

Map appeared and only Good Sam parks appear - no state parks (many on the coast), no USFS, no county parks, no other private parks, etc. appear on the map.

However, to test the feature, I click near or on a Good Sam park and other listings did appear. Only after digging deeper did other listings appear - it was not obvious.

The point remains - the old Woodall's online directory would list all campgrounds from closest to fartherest from a chosen location.

Am I pleased with the Good Sam directory - no. But perhaps there is a way to gain some additional benefit from it.

  • Hello zekegb,

I'm sorry to hear you did not find the information you were searching for.

I would be more than happy to walk you through the website's Search by Map feature. The Campground Search and Search by Map results aren't just restricted to Good Sam Parks. Non-Good Sam Parks, including public parks are included.

When Trailer Life Directory and Woodall’s Campground Directory were combined we were careful retain the most popular and informative content and information, such as the state overviews and travel itineraries that were a hit with Woodall’s readers, along with the favorite Spotlight sections and Good Sam Ratings system trusted by Trailer Life consumers year after year, that our research had shown was important to ur readers from both directories. And along with that, include all campground listings across both directories.

    Thanks again for your feedback.

  • Ellen,
My understanding was that the old Woodalls directory was replaced by Good Sam. Didn't know the campground directories were separate. The Woodall's site is now called the Good Sam Directory so it is misleading. There is no search by map feature on that site.

Found the Good Sam official campground directory. Tried the search by map feature. Very disappointing!! It only provided info on Good Sam participating campgrounds. There is no listing of state parks, national parks, county parks, etc.

The Good Sam directory is not a campground directory. It is an advertising listing of businesses that have paid to be affiliated with the Good Sam organization.

The Good Sam directory continues to be a very limited and very unuseful directory. I yearn for the old Woodall's directory.
  • Zekegb, if you didn't know Woodall's and Trailer Life has been owned by Good Sam Inc for some years. Merging two (nearly) identical products makes a great deal of internal sense

Personally I never like the Woodalls either
  • Hello zekegb - I work for the Good Sam RV Travel Guide & Campground Directory. Thank you for your feedback.

The search feature on the Woodall's site changed when Woodall's and Trailer Life Directories merged. Beacuse we merged all listings together from the two directories into one database, and to be consistent across the two brand's websites, only one search widget could be used. The Trailer Life Directory search widget became the main search tool and was implemented on the Woodall's site.

If you haven't tried this already - you can use the Search by Map feature on the GoodSamClub.com site at: http://www.goodsamclub.com/search-by-map.

Search By Map feature allows you to find a campgound by location on the map. This feature will soon be coming the our other sites.

There are listings with limited information, included online and in the printed directory, which are public parks and complimentary listings only. We also encourage all complimentary listings to take the opportunity, using our advertising programs, to enhance their basic listing information.

Your feedabck is invaluable to us and we take it very seriously. It enables us to make improvements and provide the best service we can to our members.

    Kind regards,
