GS Ext Svc Plan

I know this is a silly question, but I'm asking due to not being able to find a close.. quality repair..authorized dealer for warranty work.

Can my ext warranty coverage be used ONLY after the one year manufacture warranty expires?
I wish I could use it now, but logic tells me no.
