hail damage and total payout

I happend to come across this forum looking at something else, but I thought it might not hurt to ask about this insurance issue.

So last year my travel trailer I had insured through Good Sam/ National general got hail damaged. Then national decided to total it because of the amount of damage. I decided to keep the money and not repair it because it wasn't causing any real problems other than just how it looks. I was told that in Colorado there is no salvage title required for hail damage and I did not receive a salvage title of any sort from the agent who did the total process.

Anyway, I asked national if I could still get coverage in some manor. I assumed they would at least put a rider on the insurance that they won't cover any more hail damage or at a lower value etc. However I seemed to get the run-around with them saying they won't re-new the insurance after the policy comes up in I think May.

I looked around on the internet and it sounded like some insurance companies will insure with the hail damage at the lesser value of what it is worth. So is there anyway I can do this through Good Sam? or am I just going to have to shop around?

  • Liability insurance doesn't cover your property. It covers another's property if you are in an accident, and it is determined to be your fault.

If Good Sam already told you know, I'll go out on a limb and say that we probably can't tell you any differently.

Looks like you need to shop around if you want insurance beyond that provided by your tow vehicle if involved in an accident while towing.

  • Well I know a guy at work that has got full coverage for a used car that been paid out before. So are trailers different?

Also the other issue is I have it stored at a friends house and I worried that I may need liability on it at least just in case something happens with it in storage.
  • Your RV have been payed for once. You won't be payed again. You should have liability from the tow vehicle. That's all you need.
  • I think it would be hard to get coverage on a trailer that’s already been paid off on by an insurance company. I would think you would be able to get liability, which is probably already covered by your tow vehicle. Hey, they paid for the trailer, just use it and have fun!
  • Could you not just get coverage through another company and if they ask, just tell them yes, there's hail damage?
You wouldn't be trying to collect for hail damage again so it seems like the transaction would be legit..
