Not Such Great service!!!

I have had my first occasion to use my Good Sam Roadside Assistance today as I have a major coolant leak and my engine has shut down. The good folks at Good Sam want to tow my motorhome to Burnet, Texas, 25 miles away, instead of to the Freightliner service center in Temple, Texas which is 61 miles away. Now it is important to note that the repair facility in Burnet cannot work on my coach for 2-3 WEEKS while Freightliner can check it out tomorrow. I requested that the coach be taken to Freightliner and I was told that would cost me $300. So I will pay the extortion from Good Sam and, oh yes, I will let my membership in the Roadside Assistance program lapse in March when it terminates. I noticed that FMCA has a stronger program for $30 less each year so I guess that is a win.

Another unhappy Roadside Assistance member.

  • Hi.. just another choice to make.. buy roadside assistance or save your dollars and pay a tow yourself.. either choice works. Pick the one you are comfortable with.. jim2007.
  • This incident illustrates why I don't bother with road service contracts. The contracts put someone else in control of the decision-making with regard to my rig. Besides, the contracts are like making a bet with some company that the purchaser will make money from the deal, while the company bets that they will make money from the deal; just like playing the slot machines, the "house" usually wins from the betting. I will keep my money, and if I have a breakdown I will pay my own way.
  • Yep, read the fine print. But,,,,,,

Any way you go, none of it is designed to accommodate you. They are only designed to maximize profit for the company. They don't care about your particular situation or what it takes to make things right.

As I get older I am finding that it makes more sense to put the yearly cost of those programs into a savings account and then when I need a 300 dollar tow, I have the cost covered.

Sadly, in corporate America, it's ONLY about the bottom line.
  • GSRA was entirely correct.
Despite your letting it lapse you will not be any happier elsewhere because they all pretty much have the same contract.
YOU SHOULD READ THE TERMS AND CONTRACT wherever you end up.
    Good Luck
  • Another question is, do they make any exception at all if you are full time as far as waiting three weeks or getting in the next day? or you just suck it up and pay out of pocket for the quicker repair facility?
  • Hi.. I have good Sams, road side assistance . . I agree with down the avenue . .. need to read the contract.. Jim2007.
  • Don't be so quick to jump to FMCA or another service just because of this reason. They also restrict you to the nearest facility.
  • Why don't you just say no thank you and pay for the full tow to your requested service instead of using GS for part of the tow and then complain about the difference?
  • You have failed to read the terms of your agreement with Good Sam Roadside Service. They and you agreed to tow you to the nearest facility that can work on your RV. And that is exactly what they offered, and now you complain. I don't usually side with Good Sam because they are usually wrong, but in this case they are right and you are wrong.
