towing to your home if less than 100 miles

We were camping this weekend about 50 miles from home. Something happened to the brakes just a few miles from the camp ground. We were able to get to the campsite. I have geico roadside assistance but I also have 1 year free good sam assistance I told my son that I think I remember the salesman telling me that they would tow it to my home if less than 100 miles. So we called the number on the card and the agent said yes they would, we told him we were just checking for information purposes because we might not need it. Well it turned out we did not need the service by the time we were ready to leave 2 days later. When I got home I looked on their webpage to double check and it says they would pay to tow to nearest service center and If I wanted it towed somewhere else like home I would have had to pay the difference. Can anyone clear this up for me?

  • Actually the Platinum plus says.

"We pay 100% of your towing fees to the nearest network service facility - even if the distance is hundreds of miles!"

I read that if repair facility is 10 miles away and home is 90 you're going to pay for the extra 80 miles.
If I am wrong Tinyonerv and Weathershank please show us where it says different. GS is not going to come back to this thread and clarify the answer to the OPs question. We are pretty much on our own.

    X This is correct
  • Funny, with my auto towing ins I just get it towed and they reimburse me. No questions about the repair facility or even if it was taken to one.
    They just pay the bill.

    How bout this GS;
Charge people another dollar or two a month and cut the BS.

Similar to the AAA 100 mile towing - "sure, we'll tow you up to 100 miles"... but that mileage starts at the tow truck's home base to your disablement location to your destination and back to the truck's home base" and "if the tow truck's fee exceeds the base fee (for a small tow truck), you will have to pay the difference".

I surely don't see that in my AAA coverage, can you please tell me which page and paragraph you found it.

Reason being is that I had a tow of 106 miles to my home and all I payed for was the 6 Miles over and nothing more. The driver said at least the traffic back to the High Desert would not be bad that time of night.

    Oops, I wrote that incorrectly.

If you require a larger than standard tow truck (e.g., a medium duty wrecker) and the rate for that truck is more than the standard tow truck, then AAA will only reimburse you for a max of $300 for the up to 100 miles. If actual costs exceed that amount, then the tow truck company will charge you for the difference. That difference is computed as the hours in service multiplied by the hourly rate and minus the AAA allowance. The hourly rate can be computed from the truck's home base to your disablement location to your destination and back to the truck's home base.

I suspect that the "range of operation" has a large bearing on how the hours are charged. In my case, the tow truck was gone from its range almost as soon as it left my disablement location. That location is right at the line of one region to the next - the truck came from region A, my disablement was on the edge of region A, and my destination was well into region B.

  • Per the brochure on their website (page 7: http://www.goodsamroadside.com/images/pdf/GRA31138.pdf)

Our 24-hour, 365-days-a-year dispatch center is available with
one toll-free call. There are no pre-set mileage or dollar limits.
When you call for service, Good Sam Roadside Assistance pays
100% of the towing fees for the delivery of your vehicle to the
nearest professional service center capable and willing to repair
your vehicle. However, you must request disablement assistance
through our telephone dispatch center within 24 hours of the
disablement. If you make any request for your vehicle to be taken
to a location other than the nearest professional service center,
including your home, the mileage fee (for the extra distance
in excess of the nearest licensed repair center) will be at your
    expense.
If you request to be towed to a location other than the nearest
professional service center, as described above, you will not be
entitled to any additional towing services for the same disable-
ment. A request for a tow to your home would also require addi-
tional payment if that distance exceeds the distance to the nearest
    professional service center.

I suspect both the salesman and the phone rep were stating the basic fact but leaving out the pertinent details. "yes, we can tow you to your home"... but it will cost you.

  • GS word game......they will tow it to your home BUT it will cost you!!!! I gave up on them this year - nothing but double talk....
  • Sounds like if the nearest service center is say 25 miles away and your home is 50 then you would be responsible for the extra 25 miles.
  • Good Evening JOMO,
Thank you for your question about our tow service limits. We do have 3 different Roadside assistance programs that we offer to members and each have different benefits and limitations. If you would private message me with either your roadside membership number or your last name and zip code, I can look into your benefits and best answer your question.

    Thank you
