Not uncommon at all for businesses to charge a cancellation fee if you cancel before your agreed length of term. If you would have let the policy run it's course and then chosen not to renew, you most likely would not have been given any grief. But, that's the way it is. Try canceling your cell phone to go to another service provider, or try canceling a club membership early, or try canceling a road side service, or Direct TV, or Dish TV, and wham! Cancelation fees are as costly as just keeping the subscription, or whatever, and letting it run its course.
It's their way to keep you from willie-nillie flipping on them ... they all do it.
