In Canada a DUI is a felony conviction. You are not allowed into Canada if you have a felony conviction, unless it has been pardoned. Not always are you asked but if t yoarethey check you will be turned back. Along with guns make sure you declare any pepper spray including bear spray. Other prohibited weapons include swithblades and brass knuckles.

You can bring guns into Canada, you just need to do the research so you are in compliance with their laws. Guns fall into three categories:
Non restricted- most rifles and shot guns. Requires a permit and there is a fee.
Restricted- most hand guns. Reguires a permit that must be obtained ahead of time.
Prohibited- not allowed.

Do a search on Google. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO!!

Forget the handgun. The allowance for bringing a pistol into Canada involves being in a competition. You can cross with shotguns or rifles with the proper paperwork and even that assumes you need it for protection from bears, etc....not protection from humans. I have known numerous people who crossed with past DUI's, my understanding is that it is a DUI inside Canada that means you will never enter again. Could be wrong though.

DUI is the big thing at the border. Getting into the US with a DUI doesn't seem to be a problem, but they will guaranteed send you back if you, or anyone you have with you, has one trying to come up here. Even President Bush Sr. needed special permission to visit the Prime Minister here while he was President because of a DUI from back in the 70's.

I agree with Gary Haupt. Even a DUI from years ago will prevent entry to Canada.

One other thing to be aware of...if anyone in your party has a Criminal Record, they are inadmissible to Canada. Plus..our laws are more stringent as to what is/is not a Criminal Offense. If anyone has had a run in with the law...yeah, even back in 1970 for a joint...it would be a good thing to call ahead on that item as well.

You don't need your passport to enter Canada..you do to enter the US.

Take heed..those that have already said don't try and hide a gun...border folks are really good at finding those. And, if you have a license to carry, that info pops up the border computer.


And, just to add...these rules apply to those wishing to enter the US, too.

If I were you, I would call Canadian Customs personally or go online to their web site and get the proper answers to your questions. Get it straight from the horses mouth and maybe avoid a big problem regarding your handgun.

The gun is considered a restricted weapon in Canada under the Criminal Code. This basically means that a special permit is required to possess it. It also means that to transport a restricted weapon needs a different permit. The transport permit is a single use permit with no stops. This means you go from Point A to Point B without stopping. There are also restrictions about how it has to be stored while in transport. The red tape needed to bring it is not worth it.

Food will depend on what it is. You may need to tell border security about any fresh fruit/vegetables. Frozen food or pre packaged food is not a big deal.

The dog will have to have up to date shots with proper paperwork to prove it.

That is not completing true, there are plenty of Amercians who come to Canada to go hunting, just you need special permits. Mind you we don't hunt up here with hand guns, we need the big stuff lol...
