Has anyone traveled and camped in Mexico lately? I'm wondering about safety.

One of these days I'll try pulling my 5th wheel into Mexico. We cant seem to get to any of the more local camp spots as often as we'd like so getting down to the land of red/green/white anytime soon seems impossible.
