Today's RV'rs do not understand the impact of the caravan's in the 50's and 60's. Unlike today there were no big box stores. Almost no foreign products. Unrefrigerated meat. Milk that went sour in 2 days. Incomplete roads. Failed bridges. No bypasses for many large cities. No 4 lane toll roads. Almost no English spoken. But those RV'rs always brought things for the locals: school supplies, candy, clothing and more. A Caravan passing through a city would have escorts. Almost like a parade. Lots of $$ donated to charities. Must have been quite a happy time for the tourists and the local residents.
