It could also be a bad/broken ground connection at the battery. I had to replace my battery ground lead due to a broken terminal on the original one just the other day. Suitable cables are neither expensive nor hard to find at auto parts stores, Wal-Mart, etc. (assuming you don't have huge current needs like a largish inverter or solar install).
