Right now I am switching from 2-12V to 2-6V GC2 batteries, AGMs from Sam's Club for around $175 each, though I have yet to purchase them. Unfortunately off-season, our brick & mortar house kitchen remodeling project got in the way of completing the conversion.
I am replacing the high-standing slide-out battery tray with a flat sheet of steel with "L" bracket sides to cradle the 6Vs. Removing the tray gets me the extra height clearance needed. With AGMs there is no monitoring of water/acid level so no need to slide them out except when replacing them. According to measurements, I will still be able to get to the battery terminals with jumper cables and secondary battery charger, so I anticipate all will be well.
Like j-d says, it seems one of the two 12V batteries always fails prematurely. I hope the 6Vs in series will last longer and die off in unity.
