1976 xplorer 260

I found a 1976 dodge xplorer in great condition with a brand new chrysler 360 engine, newer tires, 2-year old coach batteries. no rust. everything works, including generator, hot water heater, fridge, stove, etc. front seats are a bit worn. bathroom is very clean! no leaks in the vehicle. wife loves it. seller has all maintenance paperwork.
seller is asking $4500.
anyone have any advice?
  • NADA Guides doesn't go back that far for the Xplorer. But the do list a 1979 version (class c) that indicates about $2800 for the base model. Depending on the options, it might go up to about $3,500-$3600. They also list a class A motor home for a higher price.

But with the "New" engine, maintenance records and additional options such as a roof AC, etc, you might be in the ball park.
  • Thanks, Jim. It does have a functioning rooftop ac. as for the engine, it is not just a short block. it also includes rebuild carb, alternator, starter, etc. Seller did remove the AC compressor which he felt was unneeded and took up too much room in the engine compartment. Having owned a similar vehicle (1974 tradesman) many years ago, i tend to agree with him!
    here's a photo
  • Just as information, Xplorer had a reputation as a top-quality builder of class B's in the 80's & 90's. I can only guess that that reputation would extend to their earlier C's. Sounds like a good price to me, with the new engine.

    Jim, "Mo' coffee!"
  • Thanks, Jim
Actually, what we really want is a Tiger cx! but we don't have deep pockets for a new one, and used ones are extremely rare, and don't stay on the market very long. One other reason I like the xplorer is its ground clearance. we like boondocking in Southern Utah!
  • That's a really nice looking unit for it's age. I agree with the AC. If you have a roof AC for when you're camping, it's not a biggie if you don't have one attached to the engine.
