Do you plan on changing the axle ratio along with the OD trans? Is it going to have enough torque to make that overdrive ratio 'usable' with the current axle ratio, or are you going to step it down have lower gears with the same final drive?
I don't see a manual trans working (at least not the NV4500/5600) since they don't use shift rods/linkage. Or you are going to have a long shifter 'throw' with your goofy bent shifter that comes from behind you. Well, I guess it would work, just seems like a pain to me.
The 4L80E is electronic. Last time I looked a stand-alone controller was in the $800 range... You mentioned no electronics for the auto in your original post.
A simple swap would be a TBI454/4L80E combo, or a Vortec 454/4L80E. Get a donor truck and pull the whole assembly along with the computer/wiring harness. The TBI has poor flowing heads (peanut ports), but an aftermarket set of heads (even the Vortecs) would be a cheap upgrade.
