I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to offer your expertise. If, like me, you don't know anything about cars, you're pretty much at the mercy of just about any mechanic. It's ALWAYS good to get second opinions. But, I intend to learn as I go.
My brother has an Econoline van with the same engine as mine (5.0L 302), and he said the heat-up problem happened to him as well. For him, it was a faulty thermostat, incorrectly positioned. His van has more than 185K miles, and says it's as strong as a tank.
I took it to the mechanic today with a lot more knowledge than I had yesterday, thanks to the knowledgeable posters here. I will update everyone as soon as I find out what the problem is.
