If you happen to NOT have a removable panel........you could always cut one with some tin snips......the sheet metal box is very thin......then you could cut your own replacement cover panel.....
I mounted my thermostat like the directions said......I used a razor blade to cut the cardboard surround and insulation........I then used a dab of silicone on each corner of the thermostat and stuck it to the tank.....that was more than 16 years ago I made that modification.......
