based on your original post I doubt its a solenoid problem and its either a battery with internal short but MOST likely a bad connection
somewhere in the cable/connection systems
What Jim said. If the dash lights go out when turned to "Start" position, power is not getting through. It could be a loose connection, or corroded connection somewhere in the power path. Turn the headlights on and try to start it while someone is watching the lights. If they dim or go out, the power is not getting through the wiring path, be positive or negative side. As suggested earlier, use jumper cables to jump from the engine to the negative battery terminal, if it still does the same thing connect it directly to the starter housing, be carful of the positive going to the starter, so you do not short out the battery. If the negative path makes no difference, try the positive path starting at the battery and work you way toward the starter hot line. Remote trouble shooting is very hard to do.
