It seems like it might be aftermarket linkage. By my measurements, the linkage cable should have 4" of travel from park to first.
My linkage cable seems to have 3.25" of travel.
Need to start investigating if there is different cables with different travel.
I think you got to the root of the problem and some people always do things half as......
You should be able to find an OEM replacement online, without paying dealer prices.
