We've towed our 2009 Malibu for >30k miles without a problem; it has the 6T45 transmission. I believe the Cruze has a 6T40. According to that 2014 Malibu Manual the only exception to the dinghy towing capabilities are that a Malibu with E-Assist CANNOT be towed 4-down.
IOW, most Malibus ARE towable as dinghies.
And to Docj's comment, 4-down towing is primarily dependent on the vehicle transmission.
