Newmar is the pioneer on slides. It's there for a reason. :) In 8 years we've never had a problem with the slides.
I think that they were the pioneer on "flat floor" slides. had some kind of rube goldberg arrangement that lifted up when it came in and when retracted left a 2 inch high walkway on one side. did drop down flat when extended however.

Newmar NEVER had a Rube Goldberg flat floor lift up system. What Newmar pioneered was the flat floor. ALL it does is, there is a slant the last 12 inches and the room rollers glide down that slant to get the floor level with the main floor. 20 years ago, HWH and NEWELL designed a lift up flat floor system for the Hi Line Newells. That system the room went out and then a sub floor was hydraulically raised to get the flat floor. Doug
when retracted their flat floor raised up and when you walked down the aisle one foot was 2 inches higher than the other. I call that rube goldberg. you can call it anything else you want. they stopped using that system which might explain something.

What are the names of the standard (if there is such a thing) slide mechanisms on coaches? If the others have a "shwintek slide mechanism" what's the name of the one Newmar uses? I'd like to find out more about them. The slides are important and I've read some real horrors about them. If there is one better than the others I'd sure like to know about them! The NewMar 3610 also come on a 26,000 Lb. chassis, most in class are 22,000 and 24,000.
Newmar's slide mechanisms are proprietary. (they make their own). The upside is that it's a robust system. Downside (aside from what you mentioned about space) is that it would require Newmar to warranty it vs any shop working on a Shwintek. I don't think they are fail-proof either. I've seen posts of Newmar slide failures. Rare and certainly less common than shwintek failures. Shwinteks are ok on smaller slides, but I would avoid one in a full wall.
As with all things mechanical, Newmar slides do fail. But, you do NOT have to go to a Newmar dealer, for warranty if you get Newmar's approval for another service center. But, from my experience, if you want a Newmar slide fixed right, go to a Service Center( or Dealer) that has Newmar trained Techs to fix them. That will save you time and money. DougBumpyroad wrote:

bumpy - MondookerExplorerThor Challenger is the only one of the group I was looking at with a full slide from behind the drivers seat all the way to the master bedroom. Great for space but I've not been a fan and I now have good reason not to be.
- carringbExplorerI have Schwintek slides. I would much I rather have Newmar's system. While it's true there may be more shops that work on Schwintek most cannot do full-wall-slide removals. My trailer had to get shipped back to the factory twice for slide room removal to repair the Schwintek drive system. However my local dealer was able to handle the repair to the smaller bedroom slide.
As much as I love my trailer and the flexibility of pulling it with my van, the slide out problems have me interested in a Newmar coach now (Thor uses Schwintek so they are a no-go). - EffyExplorer II
