2017 Newmar Ventana LE Water Heater Switches

My 2017 Newmar Ventana LE has two switches for the water heater... one, with a red-lighted switch, is flipped "ON" when hooked to Shore Power, and the red lighted switch comes on...

The other switch - lower right side of display, where the Step control & security light switches all are housed within one small black panel - has NO lite, nor does it indicate which flip (up or down) of the switch is "ON" or "OFF"... I've tried both, but when dry camping, neither position seems to work, as I get no hot water heater running (you can hear it when hooked to shore power)... I don't know which position is on or off...

It seems a silly question, I should have figured this out by now, but as I said, neither position seems to work... anyone have a thought here?

Yes, Doug, I do, but these manuals aren't as user friendly as they could be. They don't go into the nuance of actually discussing or providing directions for each operation, each button or switch, for example. Much of it is intuitive, and given this is my first RV of any kind, there is much I still have yet to learn, apparently by trial and error...

In our Newmars, the switch with the red indicator is the propane burner. Down is on. Red light means a failure to ignite. It may come on briefly but should go off when ignited.

The black switch in the three gang is the 120v heating element, up on. There is probably a secondary switch inside the exterior door of the water heater that must also be on.

Thanks, I’ll check that, though it’s not a door with hinges; one must unscrew the corner bolts to gain access.

You have a Demand Water heater. Yours may be the suburban brand. It operates on LP only. Click this link and see if the external door is like yours. Doug

  • When I step outside the water heater vent, I can hear what sounds like a blower, and if plugged into short power, it's warm to hot to the touch... but if NOT plugged into shore power, I hear nothing regardless if interior switch is up or down.

At the moment, don't know the brand of the water heater, but my question was about the interior switch, and which position provides power to the heater. Though it doesn't seem to work either way... will check per your advice, OB...
  • What do you mean you can "hear" it when connected to shore power? You mean the LP Gas burner flame you can hear? Or you hear a high pitched "whine"? If you mean the high Pitched Whine, that means the Water heater is on 120 volt and you have an Atwood brand Water heater. The LP will work when on 12 volt and both dry camp and Shore Power. There will be a red indicator light by the inside LP switch that will come ON when the flame fails to light. Really need a pic as most Water Heater switches(120 and LP) are located side by side. Also really need the Brand of Water Heater. Pics of the switches would also help. Doug

PS, the 2017 Spec sheet lists a SUBURBAN brand 120/LP water heater.
They also list an ON DEMAND Water Heater.
  • WHat Brand/Model is water heater?

Suburban has an OEM electric On/Off switch in outside compartment lower left corner
If you have an RV MFG added switch inside for electric BOTH switches have to be ON for the 120V AC element to heat the water

Should also be a switch for the Propane.....with a fault light
Turn propane switch ON ...light comes on then goes out when propane lights and proves it lit..otherwise light just stays ON

Both electric & propane have their own set of t-stats
IF tripped due to high temp they have to be manually reset
Outside compartment above gas valve...'Push to Reset'
Left reset for 120V AC/electric element
    Right reset fo 12V DC/propane

Propane requires 12V DC to function
Electric requires 120V AC to function

If Atwood...got to have 12V DC for electric and/or propane to function

    Brand/Model :H
