I did just the opposite when I wired my new garage. I put in a 4 wire 240v outlet. I then made a 4 prong to 3 wire 240v dog bone to hook up my welder. So I lost the neutral in the welder dog bone. I can now plug in my rv or the welder without having to run wire for two separate circuits.
