350 hp cat

I'm looking at buying a 2005 Tiffin with a 350 caterpillar engine that has 115,000 miles. Is this to many miles? If not what should I look for.

  • Make sure the valve adjustment has been done. Initial around 30k miles. Next at 100k miles.

Call the Caterpillar RV Hotline with the engine serial number. If a Caterpillar dealer did the work and recorded it, they can tell you. 877 777-3126.
  • No, it's not too many miles, assuming it was properly maintained.

Condition is the important factor when buying a used RV.
  • If your worried about it, do an oil Analysis, I think Speedco can do it on the spot. Mileage wouldn't be deal breaker to me. Camped next to a guy this summer, that claimed his fuel mileage increased by 2 mpg after 100k?

Assuming it's been maintained, 115K miles is not too many but it is not a Cat million mile engine. Many making less than 250 HP only make it to 400K miles. 10K miles/year is double what most MHs get so it's been well used. I would not let the miles be a deal breaker as long as the rest of the MH is in good shape. You want to make sure all systems work, especially the NoCold 1200 refrigerator. Do an advanced search (top L box above) on Norcold 1200 if it has this refrigerator.

Since you are new on here, you need to check the DOT date codes on the tires. Many on here replace their tires at 6-7 years partly because the 5K miles/year is actually hard on tires as they sit too much... not a problem with this one. Hopefully the tires are less than 4 years old as older than that I would replace the front two tires and most would replace all as you do not know how they were maintained or abused.

PS: It's hard to do an inframe overhaul on a engine that does not have sleeved cylinder liners and welcome to RV.net.
  • Our C-7 350 Cat in our 2006 Phaeton has 121,000 fulltiming miles on it and is still going strong.

Not if the engine has been well maintained! A well maintained 350 CAT engine should be due have it's first inframe around 1,000,000 miles! That engine in the Tiffin your looking at is near new at 115,000 miles.
  • That's only 10.4k miles a year. Wouldn't bother me one bit getting a diesel with that many miles. They like to run. I have an F350 that has 260k miles and she purrs as great as the day I bought it. Just need to make sure it was maintained.
