40' RV towing 20' car trailer

I am getting a 40' diesel RV and want to tow a 20' car trailer. What are some of the problems I may encounter with towing a trailer of this size? Parking in campgrounds? Fueling up? Is it common to tow something of this size or does it present too many problems. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

  • Shouldn't be a problem length wise after all the trailer isn't much longer than a lot of toads. As was mentioned, you need to be careful at RV parks since many are tough to maneuver in if the trailer/toad is not unhooked. Still, lot's of folks use trailers with minimal problems.
  • As others mentioned, you do have to plan your stops and destinations a bit (there are a lot of campgrounds that won't have sites long enough for the combination and not all campgrounds have space for big trailers).

Smaller gas stations might be a bit tough but it won't be too bad since you can back up (I've had to disconnect the toad a few times since we pull on a dolly which is a bit of a pain).
  • Shouldn't be a problem. We tow a trailer all the time. You might even find it easier than flat towing a car because you can back up! There have been times where we end up at a real nice RV park and the site we prefer is too short for our combo, so we just drop the trailer in storage. Las vegas Motorcoach Resort even puts the trailer away for you.
  • no issue pulling 20' with 43' Dynasty and add 6' for tongue. Yep on the 75 foot long.

We tow a 26' Haulmark Edge race trailer (measures 31'total) behind our 40' Dynasty and love it. You do have to plan ahead for campgrounds but it is not that big of a deal. We are used to planning well in advance.

Fuel stops are no big deal as we just pull into truck fueling lanes. There have been a few times when we have had to drop the trailer and then park in our site but they are few and far between when planning ahead, moreso when just winging it which we seldom do.

I like arriving at my destination and having the Jeep and the Harley clean as well as taking my rolling shop along with me.

    Mike.
  • Don't know what you're putting on it, but you can get 16' car haulers that will help a little bit. Put a hitch on the vehicle you are towing so it can move the trailer around when needed. I would think with the 40' motorhome maneuvering the trailer would be problematic.
  • We have a 45' MH and a 30' trailer that we sometimes pull. Fueling up has never been a problem because we only fill up at truck stops and they have plenty of room. Campgrounds can be tough. We look for easy entry and exits with long pull throughs. I wouldn't think with a 40' MH and 20' trailer you'd have much of a problem.
  • I would think that your concerns are valid, that you'd have more problems than someone towing a shorter rig, at some gas stations, and in some campsites, but, if you plan ahead, and avoid those places that have limited room, you should be fine.
Of course, you probably won't get into some of the older campgrounds, but then again, you might have been close even without the trailer! Fueling up on the interstates, and you should be fine...small town, well, that might be tight!

There are plenty of people doing the exact same thing. I see them on I-95 all the time.

    Good luck, Happy Camping:)
