- 1320FastbackExplorerI had a 6.2 in a CUCV Army Truck.
Motor was very reliable until it completely blew up for no reason.
Today, many many years later you could not give me a vehicle with a 6.2/6.5 GM motor. They are a diesel built on a gas engines internals. - romoreExplorer IIAnything with those engines will be 20+ years old, not a good candidate for trouble free travel. I managed a fleet of trucks in the 90's, there were a number of 6.5 powered pickups that gave me a lot of headaches. They were underpowered and unreliable, GM extended the warranty period on the injection pump to appease angry owners. Got great mileage when they ran. IMHO, leave it where it is and look for something newer.
- Big_KatunaExplorer III had a 6.2 van and pulled a 7000# trailer with it. It did ok. Got 12-14 towing 16-18 solo.
Not a lot of power. This motor (the 6.5) has a cult like following with forums that can tell you how to make it reliable and more powerful. Mated to an Allison and you have a nice power train.
But is it worth it? Probably not. Just buy a v10 and drive a reliable class c. - ScottGNomadI had a 6.2, you dont want this engine in any kind of RV. It just doesn't have the power.
Unlike the 6.2, the 6.5 was turbo'd and much more capable if not a bit problematic.
I nearly bought a 6.5L back 93. To this day it was the only (stock) diesel I ever drove that would lay rubber on launch. Sounded good too!
