7500lb Hitch on new E450 Ford Chassis

Some of the new E450 Ford Chassis class B+/C have a 7500 pound hitch. The GVWR is 14500 and GCWR is 22000. With those figures, it would be possible to tow up to 7500 pounds, right? We have a 2017 Ram 1500 Limited that weighs almost 6000 pounds and would be great if could use it as a towed.

Thanks in advance.

  • Good to go. I highly recommend a proportional braking system for that heavy of a toad. Anything non-proportional will either be jerky or push.

You're within the ratings. E-450 GCWR is 22,000 pounds. Whether the coach builder and the hitch are rated to do what the Chassis is rated for is another matter, but in your case, the claim is that you can go all the way to the 22,000 rating.

That said, you'll feel the Ram's weight. We have an E-450 and started out towing my 4,000 pound Nissan Frontier. With Brake Buddy. Towed with no problems. But I set up the wife's Corolla which is about 1,000 pounds lighter. Tows noticeably easier. Tow the weight of TWO Corolla's and you'll know it's there.

If you tow on relatively flat ground and relatively low altitude, go for it. If you go steep, high, fast, or have high expectations, I think you'd be disappointed.
  • Ours has the 8k rated hitch but at 7200 scale weight we decided against towing the Ram. It's 20 feet plus towbar behind a 25 foot Class A and we felt it was to long.
The ram by the way is a 1500 4X4 crew cab with topper.

Yes, with braking on the Ram. Since you only have 20 lbs of tongue weight you will not have to limit what you put in the MH very much.
