85 Chevy 350 Conversion Van Overheats):

Hello!

So I'm new to this forum and rving in general. I bought my dream car so I could drag my sorry arse out the bay area and find where I belong.

Everything about this beast was perfect. A lil ugly, but no body damage, no rust, interior alright with some work. Knew it likely needed a head gasket and was prepared but now...
Whoever worked on this monster before was a word the terms and conditions said I can't use. The belt was too short and not connected to the fan and alternator. Should have seen this, but didn't. Got me pretty far before it died. The same day I bought it. ugh.
So found a mechanic. Replaced the busted head gasket, cleaned the oil system out, replaced the belt, alternator, fan clutch, cleaned the spark plugs, checked the radiator. It was a lot of work and I'm dead broke now. And the thing still overheats. Only drives about 10 minutes before 280 and quit.

Did a compression test, and it seems to be fine, but the water boils and doesnt seem to be getting through the system. We flushed it, considered air bubbles, but that's sounding doubtful.
The mechanic I chose was low budget, and took the exhaust system apart and couldnt remember how to put it back together (dont do drugs kids) so all the vacuum tubes are just plugged off and loose in the system. I don't have the manuals yet, but am dling a diagram and rebuilding it myself this weekend.

He did suggest that whatever random parts are welded in front of the radiator could be causing the overheating. not quite sure what they are, as the prev owner was rather weld happy. But white oil smokes from the block when it over heats and I don't wanna blow the heads again. I'm in the hole and it sucks. I've only owned it 3 weeks!
So maybe tmi or too little, but what should I do? Store it, wait til I have the money and just install a new engine, or sell it asap for some of what I put in and try to find something more manageable (I have offers, but I love her so much!!!) or is there something a competent mechanic and rv owner may know that I don't?

I really don't wanna get rid of her. When I restore her she is my dream! But right now she's a nightmare ):

So, fellow rvers, any ideas are greatly appreciated...

  • Since it has been messed with in the accessories drive belts, one possibility is the remaining belt was improperly routed and is now spinning the water pump backwards. If has a flat serpentine belt, it can be done. V- belt not so e-z but some idiots are very resourceful.

If there is not a belt routing diagram sticker under the hood, see if you can find a proper diagram in a service manual.

    Best of luck!

Would the air conditioning belt and smog system being missing be a cause for any of this?

I highly doubt it, but since you have had missing belts, are you sure that the new belt is routed over the water pump pulley? I'm not trying to question your intelligence but nothing is worth not mentioning since we can't see the engine.
  • Definitely replaced the thermostat. Am eying the water pump. Hoping it's that simple. I do question my backyard mechanic decision, but needs must as the devil drives, and in my defense, she does drive now. I'm thinking about just storing it til I can get the money for a real shop. I definitely don't want anything more modern tho. I've taken her to several mechanix and everyone crushes on her immediately(: It's a great van, perfect size, awesome engine once i get her fuel injected and rip out and burn whatever the loser I bought it from did to it. I don't know what I'm looking for one here I guess. Does anyone have a similar rv that may have seen this before? Or just heard this problem before? So many things can go wrong with any engine. I specifically wanted one with few electrix and lots of lego pieces that were easy to find.

  • You need to find a qualified mechanic and have it evaluated. Letting a back yard mechanic have at it was your first mistake. Overheating could be any number of things. Bad thermostat, collapsed water hose, bad motor, plugged radiator, improper water antifreeze mixture, bad radiator cap are just a few of the possibilities. Bottom line, either fork over the money to a certified mechanic to get it fixed or dump it, accept the loss as a learning experience and move on to something a little more modern.
  • Have you checked the thermostat and water pump? Those are probably the most common causes of overheating, and if its the t-stat it will cost about $10 and 10 minutes to fix.
