Thanks. I keep thinking about selling my RV to buy a similar, newer version with a Ford chassis, but I'm really comfortable in mine. And I would just start the whole process over again, solar panels, wifi, electronics and all the nuances of making it mine. Plus, selling mine would be a financial loss.
To answer the question about the rear axle, they changed after whatever year it was and mine is the one that doesn't fall apart. I remember being concerned about it when looking for a toyota RV years ago.
Yes, I use Yotatech.com and similar forums for the 3VZE engine. I had the top-half rebuilt last year, new head gaskets, timing belt, new valves, etc. and then I changed out the fuel injectors and a list of other things myself. I have a 20,000 mile 2 year warranty on the engine work. Everytime I change parts I use Denso parts.
As for the 4 cylinder, it is way underpowered and would be a nightmare if my RV had it. Mine is 20.5' long. Most with the 4 cyl are under 18.
I had Deaver springs in California recurve and add springs to my rear axle. My RV drives like a car (maybe a bit like a long cadillac). Smooth, soft ride and I carry my Kawasaki on the rear bumper as well. It's a great setup. I have replaced the helper air bags with firestones and i use them supplementally when carrying my motorcycle or having extra weight.
One thing I have to mention is I never get over 16 MPG. My life is in my RV and traveling at posted highway speeds, the toyota was never designed to travel above 60mph. If I stay around 55mph my fuel consumption is significantly better.
On my last trip from California to NC in May my lowest was 11.7mpg with a headwind and hills and my highest was 15.7mpg on the open roads. Cruising at between 65-75mph. I almost never get less than 12, regardless where I am.
