'98 E super duty rear end oil

It appears I have a leak so I want to take the cover off and reseal it with RTV. What confuses me is do I need to add the limited slip additive or do just straight gear oil? How much oil will it hold?
Thanks
  • 6 quarts should be plenty of oil for the rear axle. If you need to get more, well that is another trip to the store.

I bought a small pump that goes into my drill to move the oil out of and then new oil into my rear axle. It really helps, as there is not a place to pour in the oil with a funnel on the F-350 that I was working under.

I guess you already know to fill it until it starts weeping out of the filler hole? The oil lubricates the outer bearings, so there will be some in that tube all the time. The vehicle needs to be level, so if tilted toward the passenger side, you might end up with a lot of fluid in that side, instead of in the rear axle housing. .

    Fred.
  • Limited Slip is an option, which you can decipher using the axle code on the Ford door placard. But again, it doesn't matter if you use full synthetic.

I don't remember the capacity off hand. Also, it varies slightly by year due to changes in both the housing and cover.

As long as you use full synthetic (which is factory recommended) then limited slip additive is not necessary, and is only needed if you have limited slip anyways. I use Mobile-1 75W-140.

Thanks, do they put limited slip in these? How much oil should I buy?
