Maybe you could just buy a small piece of sheet aluminum from a hardware store and, using pliers and a small shop vice, bent the aluminum into a small rectangular cover for the knobs that your DW just lays over them. This small cover could be quickly placed over, or removed from, the knobs for protecting and adjusting them. You could even use a screw to mount a small stainless steel cabinet type knob onto the aluminum cover for better gripping with the fingers.

That is a pretty decent idea. I just might try that. It surely would be cheap enough to try and see if my wife will remember to use it before I invest in new knobs and decal. It takes but one forgetful time to start the deformation process all over again.
