Maybe you could just buy a small piece of sheet aluminum from a hardware store and, using pliers and a small shop vice, bent the aluminum into a small rectangular cover for the knobs that your DW just lays over them. This small cover could be quickly placed over, or removed from, the knobs for protecting and adjusting them. You could even use a screw to mount a small stainless steel cabinet type knob onto the aluminum cover for better gripping with the fingers.
Kindof a "Rube Goldberg" solution - but quick, dirty, cheap, and would last forever!
