Need a little info guys. My neighbor just got a older class A with a Onan 5000. He says it starts and instantly dies. He has by passed fuel pump, replaced filter and plugs. He ran out of ideas so I took a look and as soon as you take your finger off start button it kills ignition. I bypassed low oil switch and it made no change. I need suggestions.

how do you bypass the fuel pumps and still run the generator?

Fuel pump is bad. Common problem.

Is the gas tank more than 1/4 full?

Mower gas tank mounted on a ladder above generator. Float bowl stays full.

Check the oil ... some have pressure sensor that will shut it down if low on oil...... it will crank then die if oil pressure doesn't build up...

I believe it will do that if there is no voltage output also

He has found a Onan tech to work on it. I will post outcome when I know.

If it has sat for a long period of time, the carb may be so plugged that it lets only enough fuel to get through for it to fire, but not run.

During start up the generator controller will bypass just about all the safety features and sensors. Voltage levels correct, engine temp, oil pressure (which is bypassed) and such. You're going to need the service manual to track the down and bypass each.

Onan generators have codes. Search online for codes for make and model of the generator. If that fails, take it to Cummins in Chattanooga. They can quickly diagnose and repair. Ours would cut off due to hole in fuel line. The fuel lines on our RV needed replacing.
