I've neglected my generator for a lot of years. Typically rarely use it, which means it sits for many, many months without being used. So far it starts and purrs along just fine. I think it likes the neglect. Now I will say when I first got it, I had to putz around with the carb mixture, replace the points, and tweak the governor, but it runs pretty well for being ignored all its life.
While I did not do any Google searches, I think many problems with generators comes from the interlock relays that work with the switches and oil pressure sensors. Those would not be covered in any lawn mower info.
