AC not starting

My main AC will is cycling on but will not completely start, after spinning fan the air is operating as it suppose to and will run until I turn it off. Help? The fan spins freely.?

  • Since he spun the fan and it ran, its definitely the fan run capacitor. If its a Coleman (RVP) 7.5 UF x 370 volt is what they use
  • Yes it does sound like a bad run capacitor on the fan motor. It should cost around $5- $10. It should be about 5 MFD. It might be 4 or 7.5 MFD.

The compressor can be something in the 20 MFD to 40 MFD range, but I have seen 50 MFD on high efficiency units.

If the fan is not starting then the run capacitor for it is suspect.

IF the compressor is not starting (not what I am thinking in your case) then a super boost SPPE4 would help, especially in low voltage situations!

    Good luck!

How about the start cap for the fan.
Can't remember when I last worked on mine, but I seem to remember that with the two caps, one was a start or run for both the fan and the compressor. When in doubt and without a cap check meter function, I'd just change them out, one at a time and keep what's still good for a spare.
