I am afraid that we have created a generation of offensive drivers, and not defensive drivers. And the biggest problem is that drivers today do not know the basic rules of driving. They don't even know who has the "right of way".
I read an interview with a professional chaffeur or 40 years who had never even had a fender bender. His secret was keeping an invisible buffer on all 4 sides of his vehicle. He always kept 1 car length behind for every 10 miles per hour he was travelling. If a car cut in front of him he would slow down to maintain distance.
