Every time we get ready to drive anywhere, including the dump station, we do a front to back check. Tire pressure, visualize all slides, lock the awning, lock all compartments, stow inside equipment and belongings. I follow this before leaving:
If it's up, put it down (antenna, vents).
If it's down, put it up (jacks).
If it's out, bring it in (slides, awning, outside equipment, steps).
It helps me keep on top of those things that I can control.
As far as driving skills - volunteer as a driver with your local rescue squad or fire company. You will then be required to take a two day driving course (in Virginia, anyway). The first day is classroom with a written test, and the second day is range training and testing. You have to back a fire/rescue truck (35-40') into a blind alley, parallel park it and back it through a slalom. I did it, and it made me a better driver (I'm also a volunteer EMT.)
Safe travels!
