As mentioned previously...I believe only the bus conversions and high end coaches would really pass as "safe".
I think folks get all cozy feeling up high but with a huge windshield, a frame that is not a true roll cage just aluminum bars and fiberglass/foam panels (in newer rigs, old have wood frames), lots of glass and worst of all cabinets that do not lock shut, and stuff sitting around unsecured...any accident has the potential of being really bad. In a severe accident everything in the cabinets, drawers, pets, unsecured passengers, appliances left out...can become deadly missiles. So if the crash itself doesn't cause injury or death, that cast iron frying pan or 150 pound human now airborne, surely may!
I don't believe the insurance industry &/or DOT do crash testing nor set standards except that the front 2 seats have seat belts. However if they did set standards as in cars, the rigs would be so expensive none of us could afford them.
Basically...it is what it is...buyer/user beware! We aren't rolling around in a tank...it's a house on wheels!
