Former Boater,
you and I have many similar experiences for sure.
I did the oil changes, fuel filters, most of the plumbing on the boat.
But I refused to work on toilets. Diesel under my nails, fine.
Twin 8V71TI's with two turbos and one blower/compressor on each engine.
And one of the finest engine sounds ever to be heard. A 2cycle 8-71 or 8-92 has such a distinct sound, I enjoyed thirteen years of that.
$20K to rebuild one motor. Gulp. Luckily, as with most engines, if you keep oil in them and keep them cool/maintain the radiator systems, they will far outlast me. I rebuilt the one engine only because it smoked too much at cold start, and I was under the sheds, choking out my neighbors. Warmed up, not much of anything. But when that engine was rebuilt, and they tuned it up beautifully, it didn't even smoke at cold start up, or only a wisp. Which is what nice new rings will give you.
But it was the sound of that those V8 diesels at 2100rpm that will forever live in my ears. What a marvelous noise. Yes, noise is tiring, but to a motorhead, exhaust noise is like playing a musical instrument. I bet some of the older motorhomes had 2cyle detroits. Like the interstate busses.
So what's a C9 like? I'm familiar with older 3208's, 3116, 3126, but not the new C badged engines. My gut is that Cat parts are more expensive than the Cummins, but at least they should be available just about anywhere. All American iron. Made in the USA. that part I like.
I'm a long winded poster, sorry for the ramble. When I get this coach yes I'll post pics. As in "uh, what is this thing?" Should be a few of those for sure.
Thanks.
