..IMO even 6 in a truck would be extremely crowded when you start taking long trips. Remember, your kids are going to grow and get bigger and bigger. The bigger they get, the more cramped its going to be trying to squeeze that many in a crew cab for long trips.
I personally don't quite understand why so many are pushing the 5er idea, as that forces you to use a pickup, which is just not going to be fun with that many people in it on long trips.
I really, really think your best option is going to be a good size TT with a bunkhouse, and a tow vehicle with plenty of seating for everyone (at least 3 rows), as well as enough payload and towing capacity to handle a good size TT.
Not big on f350 van idea to be honest either but has some utility.
If you're not crazy on a van, there are a few other alternatives out there that provide 3 rows of seating (something you are going to want with 4 kids, I promise!) and good towing capacity.
We (as well as several others on here) used a V10 Ford Excursion for many years, which worked great. Only thing is, they quit making them in 2005, so you'd have to find a good used one.
IIRC, I believe Chevy is still making the 3/4 ton version of the Suburban, I believe. That may be one to look into.
Nissan also makes a 3/4 and 1 ton passenger version of their NV vehicle that has good towing capacity and payload. You might like the 'look' of one of those, better than a conventional van?

Yep, welcome to the world of RVing. Very, very tough to find an absolute perfect fit/solution for all your specific needs, wants. There will almost always be trade-offs you have to make somewhere to get something closest to what you want.
Anyway, its obviously your decision, and its great you're thinking all this through BEFORE plunking down any $$$. Good luck, whatever you end up with. :)
