We traveled for several years and a lot of miles with 4 of our 6 kids in a class C RV. The rig was a a 1989 model which I bought in 1999. We now have a 5th wheel and pickup. We took one long trip with our two youngest in the 5th wheel and Crew Cab. We drove each other crazy at times. The class C was a 27 foot model with no slide. It was vastly superior for traveling with kids. I mean 10 times better IMHO. I could not imagine it being fun traveling with 4 kids in a pickup.
A class C generally has more sleeping available with the over the cab space. Also when you travel in a Class C the driver has the luxury of being somewhat separate from the the living area. Also a Class C is probably a little easier to drive than a Class A. It feels a lot like a pickup.
Now if your just gonna go a few miles and hang out at a local lake then either a 5th wheel or TT would fit the ticket just fine.
Our truck 5th wheel setup is great for Me and DW but no way traveling with 4 kids.
I love Class A's and if I had the resources I would own the biggest and best right know!
But a used Class C in great shape would be extremely reasonable to purchase and we found it very easy to travel without a toad in the Class C. We actually had a toad with ours but after a trip or two we preferred traveling without it.
Now I am fine with our setup which is a 5th wheel or Truck Camper but I vote Class C for your needs.
